Dr. Salman Zakir Scholarship

Dr. Salman Zakir was a compassionate and hard-working 24-year-old physician who passed away on October 4, 2022, just four months after graduating from medical school. Salman spent his young life working towards his goal of becoming a physician. He worked hard in high school and studied tirelessly for the medical school entry test until he received acceptance to his desired medical school of Khyber Medical College (KMC). Given the competitive nature of the government medical schools in Pakistan, Salman was one of just 2% of students accepted to the medical class of 2022 in the KPK region.

While we are torn over his untimely death, we want to establish a scholarship fund to help finance medical school tuition and fees for low-income students. Salman epitomized dedication and love for medicine. Therefore, there is no better way to honor him than to support the dreams of disadvantaged students with the same aspirations he lived for.

Medical school tuition and fees at KMC may seem negligible to many of us, but the costs are discouraging for the average Pakistani who makes less than $100 in an entire month. Tuition, books and boarding fees for public medical schools in Pakistan for a year total 75,000 rupees or $345 USD. To celebrate Salman's life, we want to raise funds to finance medical school fees for students with financial needs. Applications are available for submission decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Those with the most financial need will be prioritized, and then we will expand to include students who want to apply for merit scholarships.

We would love your help to start this scholarship in memory of Dr. Salman Zakir by donating any amount you deem appropriate. We thank you in advance.

In Loving Memory of Dr. Salman Zakir

His happiness when he ligated the base of the appendix and cutting it with a blade. He asked everyone to make videos and pics for him as he was cutting it in slow motion. He was so overwhelmed with joy at that time and I was so happy that he finally got that opportunity. He used to come earlier than me for his beds. He would cover all his beds and his fellow house officers’ beds in the chamber. Then he would complain to me about them and say that he is tired of covering the other house officer’s beds but then again, the next day he would cover all of them. He never neglected a patient, even if it would overburden him.

Dr. Nazir AK

There are a lot of good memories of him but on the very last day of that beautiful soul in this world, he met with me. We gossiped for a good 30 minutes. He discussed his plans for senior housejob. I told him I missed his CHARSADDA CHAWAL treat and he promised to bring me some soon. (I guess this will be his only unfulfilled promise). The very next morning I got this tragic news. May Allah Grant his beautiful soul the supreme paradise. Ameen.

Dates back to January 2022, in their house, amidst the hustle and bustle of festivities, we kept laughing at how irritated his sister was and mimicking her outside the room before plastering a straight face in front of her. The multiple occasions of him giving me a ride home with his sister. The many times he appeared at our gate to bring something his sister had given. Amidst the events this one time how we were both under pressure and would shoo each other away and then end up laughing. It's been a long day without you, my friend And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again. Thankful for your beautiful memories, my little brother.

Salman would come to the OT after his duty off timings and ask us if he could do an appendectomy. Then he would say, “let me get scrubbed.” I used to ask him, “Salman, you seem so interested in surgery. I think you are going to choose this field.” Salman, with his beautiful smile, nodded.

Aqdas Faiz

One of the last convos we had, Salman asked me about an appendectomy that i’d assisted and i told him in an embarrassing tone that i had removed a fine healthy appendix and we had a laugh afterwards💗 May Allah SWT keep him smiling in the edens of Jannah Ameen.

We have countless memories together. He was not only my class fellow but also my bus mate, best friend and colleague. Every time I recall KMC I think of Salman Zakir. From 1st year ragging till farewell, we spend most of our time together. My heart is racing while I think about this--I have many many favorite moments with him but here I will mention our daily routine. We used to go to college by bus after that we would have 30 to 40 minutes to move around the college. We used to explore college early in the morning and that visit to college lockers was compulsory. The funniest part in our 1st three years (1st year to 3rd year) was to hide from the Dean for wearing an improper uniform. Then we used to sit in the library studying for a while and then the canteen and library till we left for wards. Salman always had a smiling face. May ALLAH Give him Highest Rank in Jannah.

Dr. Salman

I guess every memory of the time spent with him during house job in Surgical C unit is a favorite one. But if I have to pick one, that would be his never ending love for appendectomies. One day we received a patient with acute appendicitis, he was the house officer on duty in the ward. So after receiving the patient he prepared him for appendectomy and shifted him to one of the side rooms, telling them “taso operation ba sba za kom kha”. The TMO on duty was looking around for the patient, since siderooms don't usually have routine patients. In the morning salman would come to him and whisper, “bhaijan agha ma drna sideroom k achawale wo.” Everyone in our unit loved him for the sheer dedication he showed during his rotation and the respect he paid to all his seniors and fellows. He was a gem. We’ll always remember him.

I can proudly say I was with Salman from literally the start of School till the end of college. I clearly remember myself, Salman and another one of our friends sitting in our school library and waiting for the newspaper because test results for Cadet College were to be announced. We were so happy because the three of us got selected together. We shared a room in Shaheed House in the beginning of our CCW days. Salman had a good heart. He used to randomly come to my room and sit for a couple of minutes and ask me how I was doing. We had so much fun together throughout our school time. Playing cricket, playing football, volleyball and all kinds of sports. We enjoyed all our class parties together and I must say he was a good dancer as well. We lost a gem of a person. May Allah grant him the highest ranks in Jannah. Ameen

Salman Zakir was an extremely humble and polite person like his father. For 5 years, we took the same college bus. I never heard anything negative or bad come out of his mouth. He was an amazing junior. I miss his innocent and beautiful smile. I used to see him in the college masjid and I am hopeful Allah will give him place in Jannah.

Junaid Imran

He never made me feel that he was 2 years senior to me in Med School. Once on my birthday, I had come to college but none of my close friends had wished me yet. I got a call from Salman Bhaijan, “Junaid, where are you?” I asked why. He replied , "I just found out it's your birthday and we've ordered pizza. Please join us and we will celebrate your birthday." He was such a compassionate and friendly human being. He was more than a friend--he was like a big brother to me. I miss Salman bhaijan, his million dollar smile, his texts to me in the library, his advice to me on how to leave your mark in your batch and his motivation to keep pushing me forward. I will always remember him. May Allah bless him with the infinite pearls of Jannah. I'm blessed to have known him.

A professor shouted at him in our Forensics Class back in 3rd year. We all knew it was not Salman’s fault. The professor asked him to leave the class, and addressed him harshly. Salman apologized and walked out in silence. He was respectful to that particular teacher throughout the session. This honestly impressed me a lot.

Jafar Afridi

Salman Zakir was my roommate in the hostel. When I made a WhatsApp group by the name of my ROOMMATE but didn't add Salman Zakir, he personally texted me, “Jafar why didn’t you add me on the WhatsApp group? I am also your roommate.”I can't forget this

Dr. Shaheer Khan

We were together preparing for admission tests of cadet colleges together at Madam Liaqat's tuition center. Salman was a very intelligent guy. He used to sit behind me.

Dr. Shafaq Tanveer

I had a very small interaction with him because he was junior to me but one thing that I remember is that we shared literary society for sometime in 2019 and we would have different meetings and he was extremely respectful and soft spoken and shy.

Dr. Zakir Ullah

ENT surgeon, practicing in Peshawar

Dr. Zakir attended Khyber Medical College and graduated in 1987.
Although Dr. Zakir has achieved a lot in his 30 plus years of practice,
he has not forgotten the obstacles that students face when they come
from humble beginnings. It was his love for education and learning that
drove him to work harder than everyone around him to get to where he
is today. His son, Dr. Salman, inherited this love for learning. He was
accepted to Khyber Medical College, just like his father and graduated in
June of 2022. He was a house officer in E.N.T at Hayatabad Medical
Complex when he passed away. Salman could only practice his beloved profession for a few months, but his father wants to ensure that his legacy lives on, through this scholarship.
